Cooling Tower Consultants

Cooling towers that have mechanical vibration switches on them for protection from excessive vibration and catastrophic failure typically have neither.  We know it.  The industry knows it.  They are "shock switches".  They sense a failure of a machine component severe enough to shock the switch but only if it is properly located, mounted, set, exercised, maintained, and of course not too old.  They sense failure, like a gearbox going to mush or a fan blade leaving the site.  There is likely the old 80-20 rule at work only in reverse:  20% of the mechanical switches may work but 80% do not have a clue.  That will not change without your help.

In the face of so much scientific and anecdotal evidence in the case against mechanical vibration switches offering any significant and reliable protection for cooling tower rotating equipment, they still remain all to commonly, the only installed "vibration switches" on cooling towers throughout the world.

The real cooling tower protection afforded by the IMI 685B vibration switch should make the owners decision a no-brainer.  We just want you informed so when an owner asks you about vibration protection, you will have these additional facts.  If they do not ask, you might steer them to this website for more information.  The paper supporting this in greater detail is available as a free download.
